Windows XP Service Pack 3

Today I backed up my files and tried to install Windows XP Service Pack 3. After about four attempts and as many hours, I finally succeeded.

I kept getting a dialog that said “Access is denied.” I found this KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949377. The problem was that I couldn’t terminate my antivirus program (BitDefender Antivirus 2008). Disabling it didn’t work, it wouldn’t let me stop the services or kill the processes, and even taskkill /f wouldn’t work. (Oh, for a kill -9!)

Finally I uninstalled the antivirus, rebooted, installed XP SP3, rebooted, then reinstalled BitDefender.

When I’m logged on with administrative rights, I want full control of all the processes on my computer. Is that too much to ask?
